Preventing inbreeding depression in Anacamptis coriophora (Orchidaceae) as a model of food-rewarding orchid

چکیده
Abstract Pollination of deceptive orchids has enabled scientists to understand how these species avoid inbreeding depression by reducing the number pollinator visits per inflorescence. In rewarding species, which receive a higher rate plant, geitonogamy is usually and therefore risk increases. this study, we assess breeding system orchid A. coriophora, spatio-temporal changes in its fitness as well variation nectar content after pollination. We found that partially selects allogamous pollen if pollinia from same stalk other plants arrive stigma. Furthermore, when self-pollination occurs, despite successful fructification, seed viability significantly lower than cross-pollinated plants. coriophora exhibits does not correlate with any plant feature. Moreover, volume reduced pollination, but sugar concentration maintained. This study emphasizes essential pre-zygotic post-zygotic reproductive barriers are for depression.

Evidence for inbreeding depression in the food-deceptive colour-dimorphic orchid Dactylorhiza sambucina (L.) Soò.
About one third of all orchid species are deceptive, i.e., not providing any reward to their pollinator. Such species often have lower visitation rates compared to rewarding relatives. This could result in lower levels of geitonogamous selfing and thus would provide an advantage in term of progeny fitness through inbreeding avoidance. This hypothesis could be tested by comparing the level of in...
متن کاملThe pollination of a self-incompatible, food-mimic orchid, Coelogyne fimbriata (Orchidaceae), by female Vespula wasps.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The study of specialized interactions between species is crucial to our understanding of processes in evolutionary ecology due to their profound effect on life cycles and diversification. Obligate pollination by a single wasp species is rare in Orchidaceae except in species with sexually deceptive flowers that are pollinated exclusively by male insects. The object of this st...
متن کاملReproductive isolation and pollination success of rewarding Galearis diantha and non-rewarding Ponerorchis chusua (Orchidaceae).
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Increasing evidence challenges the conventional perception that orchids are the most distinct example of floral diversification due to floral or prezygotic isolation. Regarding the relationship between co-flowering plants, rewarding and non-rewarding orchids in particular, few studies have investigated whether non-rewarding plants affect the pollination success of rewarding ...
متن کاملFloral scent emitted by white and coloured morphs in orchids.
Polymorphism of floral signals, such as colour and odour, is widespread in flowering plants and often considered to be adaptive, reflecting various pollinator preferences for particular floral traits. Several authors have recently hypothesized that particular associations exist between floral colour and scent, which would result from shared biochemistry between these two floral traits. In this ...
متن کاملInbreeding Levels and Inbreeding Depression in a Farmed
A farmed population of rainbow trout under selection for over six generations from the Norwegian Salmon Breeding Company, Ltd. was investigated for levels of inbreeding and occurrence of inbreeding depression for body weight. The average percent inbreeding levels and percent of individuals with inbreeding greater than zero (in parenthesis) were 2.9 (59.3), 2.8 (49.8), 8.5 (87.1), 8.0 (82.8) and...
